Creating Readers of Every Student in 5 Simple Steps

Quote: Readers aren’t born; they’re created.

Many ELA teachers struggle with motivating students to read.

  • Persuasion, consequences, and rewards aren’t working as well as they should.
  • Students are complying–but without real joy.
  • Some students won’t read anything besides their favorite genre.
  • Other students are so ahead of the group–how can they be challenged?
  • All these students are in the same class–and they all seem to need a different teacher.

Most kids loved to read at some point in their lives.

Creating adolescent readers shouldn’t be so difficult.

I can help you

  • Identify what each student needs next.
  • Grow all students’ identities as readers.
  • Always have something to confer about with each student.

Here’s the challenge:

When you’re an ELA teacher, you want to instill a lifelong love of reading in all your students, but so many seem closed off to the idea.

They burned the bridge to reading a long time ago.

If you could just help them rebuild those bridges, you know they could be readers again.

That’s why the Creating Readers Workshop is so important. With its resources and formula, you can build those bridges.

Meeting Penny Kittle right after I won the Book Love Foundation grant in 2013.

I get it. Motivating students to read is frustrating.

You became a teacher because you love reading, and you know how important it is for a life of freedom. And yet so many students turn this important activity down!

You’re not alone. As a teacher, I understand how hard it can be to get students to give reading a chance.

I’ve used 16 years of classroom practice and my unique experiences as one of Penny Kittle’s first Book Love Foundation grant-winners to create readers without turning them off of reading in the process.

I believe we create readers when we help students see themselves as readers.

In five simple steps, you’ll move all students into a deeper identity as readers.

  1. Identify readers and their thoughts.
  2. Start conferring with readers.
  3. Validate their current thoughts about reading.
  4. Stretch them to new thoughts.
  5. Manage a classroom of readers.

That’s okay! You can watch the replay. You can also send your questions in. I’ll answer them on the call, even if you’re not there.

You have access for the lifetime of the course–and any new updates I make you will get automatically.

Q: Is this workshop for me?

This workshop is perfect for any teacher that uses an independent reading program in their classroom. The foundations would be easily applied in 4th grades through high school. I offer differentiated conference questions that could be applied across grade levels on topics that spiral in the Common Core ELA.

Q: Is this workshop worth the investment?

If you long to create readers out of every student, if you know you have students whose relationship with reading needs healing, this affordable workshop is the perfect start. It is extremely low entry to get started and you can start seeing results quickly.
